Meet the Team-Magali Lamyin

We are proud to be part of the growing Deetken Impact team, and are excited to introduce this diverse and talented group of investment professionals. We regularly feature our colleagues in these interview-style profiles so you can get to know them better!

Meet Guillermo Zepeda, a Portfolio Analyst at Deetken Impact. In this role, he supports the portfolio management and monitoring, with a focus on renewable energy investments, and works with companies to improve performance. With more than a decade of experience in the renewable energy industry, Guillermo has worked with a range of institutions including PwC, IC Power, and Inkia Energy. Guillermo holds an MBA from Bentley University, an Executive Masters degree in Management from INCAE business school, and Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Universidad Americana.

Currently based in Deetken Impact’s Vancouver office, Guillermo was born in Canada and raised in his family’s home country of Nicaragua, and speaks Spanish, English, and French.

As one of the newest team members at Deetken Impact, tell us how you ended up joining the company?

After moving back to Vancouver from Nicaragua with my family in January 2023, I got in touch with a friend and former coworker who was working at Deetken Impact at the time. Inspired and touched by their great impact on communities in Latin America and the Caribbean, I was excited to learn that they were headquartered in the city, and shared my resume with my friend to pass along. Happily, after several weeks and 4 interviews later, I was part of the Deetken Impact team!

As a dual citizen of both Nicaragua and Canada, how have your diverse experiences shaped the perspective and focus you bring to your work?

I believe there are many facets of my life that have been profoundly shaped by my experience with a range of cultures globally. My own upbringing in Nicaragua coupled with international studies and travels have expanded my cultural awareness, allowing me to navigate and respect different social norms and values. Importantly, this has enhanced my language skills, enabling me to communicate more effectively across borders, and build stronger, more inclusive networks.

Since joining the Deetken Impact team, I had the opportunity to visit our investee Soventix on my first trip to the Caribbean. As I interacted with their team members and partners, I recognized the value of working and living in multiple countries and environments that enables me to adapt quickly and be resilient and versatile in the face of change. These practices —cultural awareness, multilingual communication, networking, and adaptability—are the cornerstones of my professional approach, deeply influencing how I engage with and contribute to my work.

What is your favorite part of the work you do, and why?

Deetken Impact has a great team with a vast amount of knowledge, and I consider it an incredible privilege to learn everything I can from them. My love of learning and taking on new challenges is well aligned with the variety of tasks I perform in multiple departments including IT, Finance, and Management, among others, and it is this diversity and breadth of my role that is my favourite part of my work.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I have quite a few artsy hobbies; I love drawing, and I have loved music as long as I can remember. Although I mostly sing and play guitar, I am learning to play the keyboard too. While living in Nicaragua, I was part of a cover band named Cha’q’atol (chacuatol – loosely translated as mishmash or jumble) that performed Coldplay songs alongside popular Japanese rock tracks, many of which were well-known soundtracks for popular anime series. We even had the opportunity to play at local anime conventions!

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

My passion for gaming might come as a surprise. I enjoy both video games and trading card games, as evidenced by my 8th place finish in a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament a number of years ago, it’s a hobby I have had since its origins in early 2000’s and this was my first top in a tournament outside Nicaragua

What is your favourite city/country you have visited, and which is at the top of your bucket list to visit?

In 2019, I took a trip to Italy and I loved each and every city I visited, but if I had to choose one I would pick Florence. At the top of my bucket list is Japan, where I plan to visit many different cities in every prefecture from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
